Every week brings something different in our world of canine behaviour and training. Over the last few days alone, we’ve worked with everything from feisty Dachshunds to giant-breed Bernese puppies, and each case has shown us again why no two dogs – or families – are the same.
We began the week with a Springer Spaniel youngster whose energy levels were as high as his enthusiasm. The focus here was on channelling that drive into recall, play, and early impulse control. By building games that reward focus and calmness, we’re already seeing a once-scatterbrained pup start to think before he acts.
Later, we worked with a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy. With large breeds, early training is critical – what’s manageable at 10kg becomes a challenge at 50kg. This session was all about shaping focus in distracting environments, introducing scattering games, and setting foundations for calm, confident lead walking. The owners are now equipped with structured techniques to prevent the puppy from becoming overbearing as he grows.
We also spent time with a Miniature Dachshund struggling with barking and confidence. Dachshunds often mask insecurity with vocal behaviour, and here the training pathway was about building resilience, rewarding independent decision-making, and helping her feel safe in her crate and home environment. Small dog, big personality – but progress is already clear.
Not all of our cases involve puppies. We also reviewed a case with an older Shih Tzu cross showing guarding behaviour and reactivity. This sort of entrenched behaviour requires careful assessment, consistency, and a tailored plan to rebuild trust and reduce conflict in the home. It’s never too late to work with a dog, but it does require patience, structure, and guidance.
Finally, a German Shepherd cross reminded us just how powerful and quick-thinking these working-type breeds can be. Here the goal was loose lead work, targeting, and calm exits. With the right blend of shaping and reinforcement, the handler now has a much more engaged, cooperative companion.
Each of these dogs is on a different path, but the principle is the same: structure, clarity, and fair reinforcement create trust and change. That’s the core of everything we do at The Dog Man®.
